A Quality Carpet

If you think that buying a carpet for your home is easy, wait until you step into a shop. It is as complicated as deciding the right foundation shade for your skin in the mall lights. You understand the pain ladies, right? Anyhow…there is no need to say that you have to be vigilant while shopping for a carpet because there is a lot that can go wrong while doing so. You want a carpet that not only adds charms to your house, but also lasts long. Let us skip the science behind the carpet and centuries-old history, and firstly know some terms that are often associated with it. After all, no one wants to look stupid in front of the salesman when he is all babbling about how great the carpet is, and you are unable to understand a single word of it. So, let us start.

Important Terms that Describes a Carpet:

  1. Pile: It is the upper surface of the carpet, often known as the ‘face’ which is visible and it consists of yarn tufts. They are of two types: cut pile and loop pile. Cut piles are the straight cut fibres such that one end of fibre is woven and one is loose which makes the carpet soft. On the other hand, as the name suggests, in loop piles, the fibre is woven back in, making a loop. Pattern carpets are the combination of cut and loop fibres.
  2. Fiber: Not all the carpets are equal and fibres play a significant role in that. Nylon is soft and durable but vulnerable to stain. PET fibres are recycled plastics that are tough and stain resistance. Triexta fibres are soft, easily cleanable and durable. Polypropylene fibres lose shape with time. For a luxurious feel, wool carpets are the best.
  3. Padding: It is the back portion of the carpet (means the pad that is laid down on the floor before carpet) and the deciding factor of the durability. You can also get some options in that like ‘felt’ padding is made up of jute and they are expensive. ‘Foam’ padding are very common and they come in different densities. Some ‘rebond’ padding are the recycled ones that go well with every carpet.

Ask Yourself these Questions before buying a carpet:

  1. For which room you are buying the carpet? Does it require the looks or toughness?
  2. Does the color of the carpet matter?
  3. What is the size of the room? Do you need to make it look larger?
  4. How does the room look in lightnings? Can the carpet do justice with the room?
  5. Is redecorating a need or a choice?
  6. What is the warranty on the carpet? What things are covered in it?
  7. What does carpet provide except being a flooring?

Some Important considerations that you have to keep in mind while going for a carpet search

  1. Based on the area of your room, you need to seam carpets to cover the whole room. Generally, carpets come in 15 feet. Make sure that the carpet does not give away the seams which look awkward.
  2. While using the carpets for stairs make sure that the padding is not visible from the side of the stairs. Make sure to hide them such that the looks of your carpet is not ruined.
  3. Another thing to keep in mind is to judge whether the carpet sheds or not. Some shedding is bound to happen, but cheap carpets shed a lot while cleaning which makes them useless within a short period of time.
  4. The softness and color of the carpet also matter. Not all the colors suit every room. If you are color coding your carpet with the room, it is essential to judge whether the color would make the carpet look dull within a few days or maybe it attracts more dust and dirt.
  5. A general reminder; carpets should be stain proof and supported by a good padding.
  6. Watch the cost per square foot of the carpet and the warranty that is offered.

Let’s Begin Carpeting:

Carpets for Dining Room:

Here, in addition to the stain proof feature, you also need anti-microbial properties. Triexta and PET are good, or you can also go for dyed nylon carpets. These carpets are treated such that they protect the dining room against germs and bacteria’s. All the plain, patterned and loop pile carpets go well with the dining area.

Carpets for your Master Bedroom:

The type of carpet to be used depends on the type of the room. Master bedrooms are more of a private place and not many people enter there. So, the main requirements of this room flooring are- good looks and soft touch. The stain resilience and toughness are not the primary concern. You just want to feel the warmth when you step down from bed. Soft fibres like nylon, triexta and PET makes a very good choice. If you are on a budget, you can also go for polyester carpets. Solid color lightweight carpets are the best suitable choice.

Carpets for Living room:

The living room needs a carpet which is stain resistance as well as tough to bear all the traffic. It is the most important part of the house that you want to look the best and showcase for the guests. For the softness and durability, use cut pile carpets or to be specific; use velvet cut pile carpets. Again textured designs are perfect as they shadow the dust, dirt, and stains efficiently.

Carpets for Basements:

You do not want a great look for basements, but toughness is a must. Polypropylene carpets with loop piles are a great choice. Use a good padding underneath to increase the life expectancy of the carpets at the basement.

Carpets for Children’s room:

This room is prone to a lot of stains, wear and tear and spills. The soft carpets do not make the cut here, you need stain resistant carpets. Polyester carpets are stain resistance and they are the best choice for kid’s room. Some stain resilient version of nylon carpet is available in the market. The carpets here should be patterned one such that it does not give away the dirt easily.

Carpets for Stairs:

If you want to carpet your whole house, why leave stairs? The stairs need dense carpets with toughness. Loop pile carpets or textured ones are undoubtedly the best. Experiment with colors and patterns here, some people also use wool carpets on stairs and hallways.

Carpets vs. Rugs:

Rugs can be folded and taken with you anywhere. The rug of one room can be used in another room. So, some of you people must have a question as why use the carpets which are expensive and less versatile as compared to the rugs? Here is the answer. Carpets offer more comfort and safety than the regular rugs. They are soft and tough (due to underlying padding) at the same time. The floor condition does not matter, as far as you are using a good quality padding. Some carpets also offer stain resistance and bacteria resistance. While area rugs are not as adhering as carpets, there is a chance that you trip or slip over it.

Seeing on the other side, rugs are easier to clean. You can lift them and clean outside. The same cannot be done in the case of wall-to-wall carpets. They need to be cleaned right there. If you cannot keep your carpet clean or you are allergic to dust, carpets are not the best choice for you.

Carpets are the best friend for your floor. They give you comfort, style, safety and great looks. They also provide warmth and insulates the indoor environment. A walk on the carpet is like a walk in the garden. It feels great! Not to mention, it saves you from the hard falls. The only thing that you have to do is keep this carpet healthy. When you keep it healthy, you save yourself from allergens. As a shocking fact; carpets are actually cost effective and you have to spend less over the time as compared to the floor repairs.

So, yes to the first warm feeling that you feel while stepping down from the bed in the morning and say yes to the carpets.
